Rayon Sports have progressed to Rwanda's Peace Cup quarter-finals after eliminating Rutsiro in the round of 16 with a 4-1 overall score.
Robertinho's side pulled off a 2-0 emphatic victory over Rutsiro in the round 16's second leg on Tuesday night thanks to Fitina Omborenga's beautiful freekick and a clever finish from Aziz Bassane.
Rutsiro, who were without their talisman Yves Habimana due to injury, came to Kigali Pele Stadium seeking to rebound from a 2-1 deficit, which they suffered in the first leg. However, their efforts proved fruitless as they conceded two goals in the second half.
The two sides played out a goalless first half, and it was Omborenga, who opened the scoring in the 62nd minute. The long-serving Amavubi right-back scored a spectacular freekick from 25 yards after Fall Ngagne was fouled.
Bassane doubled the advantage in the 83rd minute with a fine finish after Abdul Rahman Rukundo set him up to complete a 2-0 in fashion.
The Cameroonian winger, who joined Rayon Sports in the summer of 2024, marked his first goal of the season in all competitions.
Rayon Sports will face the winner of Gorilla v City Boys round-of-16 clash in the quarter-finals. Their most recent Peace Cup championship came in 2023.
In contrast, Gasogi United reached the quarter-finals after beating AS Muhanga 3-1 on aggregate score, while Mukura eliminated Intare with a 2-0 overall score.
Bugesera played out a 0-0 second-leg match against Amagaju and bowed out of Peace Cup.
